British Red Cross Ambulance Services

The following figures indicate the growth of the British Home Ambulance Transport Service run by members' of the Order of St. John and the Red Cross. The first halfmillion cases carried by the Service was recorded in 1927, the first million in June, 1931, and by December 31, 1945, the figure stood at 3,920,229, with 364,048 patients transported during that one year. Since the war, 472 low mileage ambulances and a complete mobile X-ray unit no longer required by the army have been transferred to the Home Service. The latter has been incorporated with the established units in the Red Cross Headquarters X-ray section for use in routine hospital work. Incidentally, this Section has also carried out some interesting and important Xray investigations for the Medical Research'--.Council.
