Whakatane Surf Club’s Practical Practice: New Junior Section Formed

On Sunday both men’s and women’s teams of the Whakatane Surf Life Saving Club, had five mock alarm drills. There was a good muster of members besides a number of newly enrolled junior members. The girls’ teams, both six and four, went very well. Only the recovery of the patient from the beltman seemed to be a little rough. The men’s teams showed a vast improvement on the Tauranga performance and should do even better with more experience.

Junior Life Savers A meeting of the committee last week decided to attempt to recruit and train junior life-savers, from 12 years of age up. The plan at the moment is to try to establish a boys’ and.,a girls’ team and train them with a view to stepping up to senior ranks when they attain the right age. Thus the club, hopes to establish a permanent source of reinforcement for its senior teams. ; There is still room for more active members, and there is still ample need for the service at Ohope. A further meeting, to which parents and children likely to be interested in the junior scheme were invited, was held on Sunday afternoon. A number of young recruits joined on the spot and there are indications that the juniors will achieve substantial numbers.
