Whakatane Women’s Institute Meeting
The Whakatane Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting on recently in the Methodist Hall, Mrs Barker presiding. A minute’s silence was observed for members recently bereaved. Details of Group Travel were read, explaining that the trip to the “Northland” arranged for May would cost £lB inclusive for 10 days, and that members intending to take this trip should hand in their names as soon as possible. - . It was decided to postpone the garden party until later in the year and that in future the hostesses for each month would be responsible for contributibns toward the monthly gift parcel to Britain. At the conclusion of business the social half-hour .was taken over by Mrs Smith and Mrs Cairns. As .it was grandmothers’ day, all grandmothers were presented with shoulder sprays on arrival. Mrs Lysaght played songs of grandmothers’ day—■ “Just a Song at Twilight,” “Bells of St Mary’s” and “Mpther Machree.”
A competition of sketching of grandmothers by the rest of the members was won by Mrs Sutcliffe who sketched Mrs R. P. Shaw. A reading, “The Hobbs Family” was given by Mrs Cairns, Miss Hobbs being one of the first white children born in New Zealand. One of the members present was a descendant of Mrs Hobbs.
The' roll call was “Ancestors” date of arrival and any interesting events. A display of treasured articles belonging to ancestors was very much admired and was certainly an eye-opener to this generation.
Results of competitions: Apple jelly, Mrs Larsen 1, Mrs Fennell 2; dahlia, Mrs Sutcliffe 1, Mrs Smith 2; beans, Mrs Hannah 1, Mrs Fennell 2.
