Borough Building Permits Building permits issued in the Borough of Whakatane last month were to a total value of £4,776. They covered three new * residences, a wash house, four sheds arid three shed removals. Nightmen’s Wages Up At Monday night’s meeting of the Borough Council payment to the nightsoil contractor, Mr E. V. Honeycombe, was raised from £702 a year to £728 a year. He claimed a rise of 10/- a week was necessary ip view of increased wages costs. Motor Cycle Hill Climb After the success of their reliability trials, the Bay of Plenty Motor Cycle Club, in conjunction with the Opotiki Club, has 'decided to hold a hill climbing contest on the Native land block up the Gorge Road, on Sunday.
Ohope’s Hottest Day With the temperature reaching 85 degrees just after 3 p.m. at Captain’s Cabin, Ohope experienced the hottest day this year. Suitable tides adding to the attraction of the water made the day an enjoyable one for those at the beach. Hospital Haircuts Yesterday’s meeting of the Bay of Plenty Hospital Board gave the matron of the district hospital authority to make arrangements for a barber to visit the hospital at regular intervals to provide haircuts and shaves for patients. Boy Cyclist Injured
As the result of a fall from his bicycle on Ohope hill, on Monday afternoon, Rod Mclntosh, aged 14, son of Mr R. Mclntosh, Douglas Street, Whakatane, was admitted to the casualty ward. of the Whakatane District Hospital suffering from a cracked right arm and lacerations of the head. N He was treated and discharged the same afternoon.
Hospital Access Road Pointing out that the hospital access road is .in a condition be considered dangerous, Mr A.F. McGougan asked the Hospital Board yesterday to have something done about it. The Board authorised the chairman to approach the Borough Council and, if they could do nothing, to seek help from the County Council.
Glorious Last Kick At the foot of Pohaturoa Rock a cactus plant is in glorious bloom. , The flower head towers several feet into the air as though proud of its achievement. Well it might be. This is its finest hour. That type of cactus, the agave, according to ' those who claim to know, flowers only once in a lifetime, in its seventeenth year. Then, they say, the plant dies. A Profitable Hesitation The four guinea prize offered at the Quiz held at Captain’s Cabin last Saturday night was won by a local couple who answered four questions correctly, Luck was with them when asked their final question as they appeared undecided bu,t someone in* the hall called out an answer nullifying the question and, on their next question, they did not hesitate apparently knowing the answer. A Real Sad Sack The wisdom of making sure that your gear is in good order was for- > cibly brought home to a party of mussel gatherers around the rocks at Ohope on Sunday. Whilst en route home with a large bag, the fruit of their day’s efforts, the party was passing it from one rock to another by means of a rope which apparently had seen better days for at the critical moment it parted and the sack and its contents returned to the sea. MacGregor; Pick of Punch; Wilderness Trek, Zane Grey. *' Surf Sidelights A couple pf minor mishaps added a certain touch of humour to the Whakatane teams’ performances at the Mt. Maunganui surf carnival recently. Right in the middle of her rescue act, one of the girls felt her “togs” slipping. One of those buttonup gadgets, it was, and the button had come unhitched. With a struggle she got herself adequately clad be-, fore landing, but the emergency repairs had failed to restore the sleek smartness of the original fastening system. When the beltman in one of the men’s teams got himself all trussed up in his opponents’ lines his team mates had some anxious moments, but it' all ended in a general laugh, with - the victim sharing it.
