New Cement Ship
A small steamer built during the war period, it is learned, will shortly be commissioned temporarily to freight cement from Portland to Napier. The vessel is at present undergoing survey at Auckland, and it is understood that she will be put into commission early in the year. She will be under the control of the shipping controller, who has power to divert the vessel at any time to whatever purpose is deemed necessary. No official statement has been made in connection with this move to ensure more plentiful supplies of cement to the building trade in the East Coast area, but it was confirmed in shipping circles at Napier that the vessel is to be run by an Auckland agency on the Government’s behalf preparatory to sale to an intending purchaser. The vessel will ply from Portland to Auckland and from Portland to Gisborne and Napier. Her capacity is believed to be between 230 and 300 tons.
