Should Government Afforestation Lands Pay County Road Rates?

A suggestion from the Dominion council of Federated Farmers that land used for afforestation by the State Forest Service or other organisations should be liable for road rates to county councils, or alternatively that county councils should be entitled to a royalty on all timber cut, will be considered by the Government now that it is examining the question of county roading' and the' problems associated with it. That information was given to the federation by the Commissioner of State Forests, Hon. C. F. Skinner, who said that it was not possible to give effect to the terms of the Dominion council’s resolution. At present no statutory authority existed either to rate the forest service or charge a royalty as the federation has suggested.
