Plans For New Post Office
Clock Tower Placed On Dedicated Roadway In planning Whakatane’s new Post Office, Government architects allowed the main vestibule and clock tower to jut out 18 feet into the dedicated roadway at the corner of the Strand and Commerce Street. At its monthly meeting last night the Borough Council declined a request .to shift the dedicated roadway and referred the plan back to the Government for amendment. Apprised of his error by the Town Clerk, the Government Architect had written to the Council pointing out that if the Council insisted on the present road line it would be difficult to get the same effect with the staircase and clock tower recessed.
The Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, pointed out that the corner in question had been rounded off by the Harbour Board at the request of the Council with a view to handling the greater traffic volume that would come with future development of the town. The road line suggested to leave the Post Office plans unaltered would lead to congestion. He thought it would be advisable to adhere to the dedicated road line. Crs A. D. O’Rourke, K. Needham and W. Sullivan all agreed that, in the interests of traffic safety and possible future development, the dedicated road line should be retained. The Council then agreed, -on Cr Sullivan’s motion, to refer the plans back to the Government for amendment.
