ELECTRICIANS NOT KEEN ON PROPOSED ALTERATIONS TO ACT
A lively and interesting meeting of the Whakatane branch of the Electricians’ Institute was presided over by the president, Mr R. Combes, in the Borough Council Chambers, recently. Most of the meeting was taken up in discussing the various recommendations of the parent body in connection with the proposed changes in the Wireman’s Registration Act and other legislation that will affect the electrical trade. Mr Burgess was of the opinion that the Electrical Wireman’s ticket should not be interfered with, as suggested, by dividing it into two grades, Wireman’s and Electricians’. The present ticket, he maintained, was looked upon very favourably in other countries. That the standard of the trade would be lifted generally, was the opinion of Mr Thompson. Mr Ditchfield considered that if there were two fields to which tickets could apply, then obviously there was room for two tickets. When the matter was put to a vote, the meeting decided in favour of retaining the present regulations with only minor changes. Opinions differed as to whether electrical contractors should be registered. However, a vote showed the meeting in favour of registration, providing clause 7 was deleted from the proposal. Other items caused little or no discussion and after going through various remits to the conference in Dunedin, the meeting closed with supper.
