Gifts To Hospital In addition to the gifts to the hospital for December acknowledged by the matron in her monthly report published last week, cash donations were received from Messrs A. F. McGougan, F. Mahy and C. A. Suckling. Huge Stingray Net fishing at Ohope oh Sunday evening, Mr D. Anderson and a party of helpers hauled in a giant stingray measuring over five feet in length and over three feet across. It weighed about a hundredweight, and was caught quite close to the shore, where the water was warm, clear and unusually calm. Clever Footwork Disporting himself in the unusually calm and clear water at Ohope. Beach on Sunday, Mr M. Canning, of Whakatane, saw a large brill lazing in the warmth. Planting his foot firmly on it, he called to his brother, Mr R. Canning, to get a spear. That done, they made sure of their captive, which provided a hearty meal.

Income Tax Payments The Commissioner of Taxes draws the attention of taxpayers to, the notification appearing in today’s issue that the due date of payment of Income Tax is on Wednesday, 11th day of February, 1948. Five per cent additional tax will accrue if the tax is not paid on or before 3rd March, 1948. The demands will be posted on or about 4th February, 1948. Demands must be presented with all payments, and if a demand has not been received the taxpayer should notify the Superintendent of the office of the Land and Income Tax Department where his records are filed.—P.B.A.

Social Security Charge In this issue appears an intimation from the Commissioner of Taxes that an instalment of the Social Security charge on income other than salary or wages derived during the year ended 31st March, 1947 falls due on Ist February, 1948 and that a 10 per cent penalty will be incurred on amounts not paid within one month of the due date. Attention .is also directed to the fact that employers who fail to deduct and duly account for wagestax in respect of all wages paid, including amounts paid to. casual employees engaged on .a .'time, piecework or contract basis,_ render themselves liable to severe penalties.— P.B.A.
