P. & T. Social Evening Of Welcome And Farewell To Officers Transferred
Recent transferees to the Whakatane Post Office, new local recruits and three officers leaving on transfer were guests of honour a 4 a social evening on Wednesday night organised by the social committee of the Post and 'Telegraph department’s Whakatane staff. Mr W. A. Trask, postmaster was chairman for the evening and Mr R. S. Buttimore M.C.
Music for dancing was provided by Mrs Buttimore, Misses J. Miller and C. Cottrell and Mr B. V. Cottrell. Star item of the evening was Mr H. Waite’s piano presentation of variations of “Home Sweet Home” in the Russian, German, English and American manner.
The Deputy Mayor, Mr C. S. Armstrong, proposed the toast to the Department, and the postmaster replied. Mr R. Riddell proposed the officers recently transferred to Whakatane and recruited here, Mr C. A. Carrig replying. The postmaster and Mr Buttimore both took a hand in proposing the health of the officers on transfer, and the three concerned, Messrs C. B. Couling, L. G. Bennett and K. T. Breese, all replied. Mr Couling, who has been money order and savings bank supervisor here is to become postmaster at Te Karaka, Mr Bennett transfers from lines foreman here to overseer at Gisborne, and Mr Breese, now an exchange operator, will be a clerk at Wellington. The nineteen who were welcomed to the Whakatane staff are Mr and Mrs Carrig, Misses D. Brennan, M. Grace, J. M. Miller, Messrs J. B. Porter (lines foreman i» place of Mr Bennett), R. W. Kenny, M. McGill, K. D. Hall, L. K. Candy, J. R. Davey, B. G. Bennett, B. C. Grant, D. S. Hume, O. Fowell, M. N. Jaram, R. C. Vail/J. D. A. Dufty, B. E. Robinson.
