Miss Shirley Donaldson has returned to Whakatane after an absence of 3i years in Auckland.

Mr W. G. C. Hurst, of Ohope, is expected to return at the end of the month from an annual holiday. Mr R. F. Gambrill, of Gisborne, District Governor of Rotary, will visit the Whakatane Rotary Club on March 3.

Mr W. A. Trask, postmaster, of Whakatane, left yesterday on an annual holiday trip to the Gisborne district. Mr R. Riddell is relieving as. postmaster.

Mr W. McKay, of Auckland, has been nominated as next Governor of the Rotary District that includes Whakatane. Mr R. F. Gambrill, Gisborne, is the present office-holder.

Lieutenant-Commander C. G. Palmer, D.S.C., and bar, V.R.D., R.N.Z.N.V.R., of Auckland, has been placed on the retired list with the rank of commander.

President H. G. Warren and Rotarians A. J. Canning, N. McG. Bremner and Les. Brown will represent a the Whakatane Rotary Club at the District Conference at Auckland from February 16 to February 19.

Sir David Smith was unanimously re-elected Chancellor of the University of New Zealand at Wednesday’s session of the Senate. Mr L. J. Wild (Wellington) was' elected pro-chancellor and Professor I. A. Gordon (Wellington) was re-elected vice-chancellor.

■ Dr J. P. Brown, who was house surgeon at the district hospital, Whakatane, during 1946, has died at the mission hospital in China to which he went as a CORSO worker. Native of Gore, Dr Brown came here after graduating at Dunedin and serving a short time as house surgeon elsewhere. Before taking on the CORSO appointment, Dr Brown was senior house surgeon at Cook Hospital, Gisborne. Dr L. J. Comrie, M.A., Ph.D., F.R.A.S., distinguished New Zealand Scientist, who was born at Pukekohe, is at present revisiting the Dominion. Dr Comrie, who is managing director and founder of Scientific Computing Service, Ltd., of London, and Mrs Comrie, are at present in North Auckland, and will later travel in the South Island in the course of a three months’ stay in New Zealand. The New Zealand Minister to Washington, Sir Carl Berendsen, will arrive at Auckland by the British Pacific air service early, on Tuesday morning. He will leave San Francisco today. The visit of Sir Carl is principally a holiday, but he will have consultations with the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, and Government officials while in Wellington, particularly on the United Nations.

Rev. H. M. Bell, who has been for the past three years Minister of Knox Church, Whakatane, leaves on February 2 by air for Australia, where he and Mrs Bell will spend four months at Melbourne refreshing their medical knowledge before returning to the New Hebrides mission field. Rotarians, through President H. G. Warren, at Wednesday’s luncheon, expressed their regret at Rotarian Bell’s departure and their good wishes to him and his family for the future.
