ELDERLY CYCLIST ON COMPREHENSIVE TOUR OF NORTH ISLAND
Mr J. W. Brown, of Gonville, Wanganui, passed through Whakatane on-Saturday in the course of a bicycling tour of the North Island. Mr Brown is 78 years of age, and it is 50 years ago since he last visited Whakatane. His trip has brought him from Wanganui up the East Coast to Gisborne and around Cape Runaway to Opotiki. From Whakatane he will travel to Tauranga and Coromandel before going on to Auckland to visit a son. From Auckland he will then make his way back to Wanganui which he intends to reach before February 20 to enable him to collect his old age pension. Mr Brown spent most of his life at sea in an old sailing boat. He does not regard with favour the recent records by fast ’planes. His bicycle, a well known English make, was purchased in 1910 and has done over 60,000 miles to date.
