Long Way From Home: Dannevirke Schoolboys On Hitch-Hiking Tour

Leaving their homes on Mondaylast, two Dannevirke boys, Stuart and Keith Hastie, hitchhiked up the main trunk route to Hamilton. Staying there only a short time, they continued on to Rotorua. Camping out, they did a tour of the thermal areas, then moved on to Tauranga, arriving there on Friday.

“We decided to stay a while, but the weather was all against us so we packed up and headed for home” said Stuart Houghton when the boys arrived at Whakatane yesterday. “We left the Mount earfy yesterday morning and arrived at Whakatane about 1 o’clock. We aim to be back in Dannevirke on Friday, by just taking it easily. We are going back via Opotiki, Gisborne and Napier.” When asked who were the most obliging so far as “getting a lift” went, both agreed that the “old jalopies” and trucks were the best bets. It was a much rarer thing for a newer model car to stop, they said. “Maybe they thought we would damage their upholstery with our dusty clothes,” smiled Keith Hastie.
