Carrier Fined For Breach Of Little-Known Rule

A traffic regulation not widely known was invoked on Tuesday before Messrs C. S. Armstrong and I. B. Hubbard J’s P by the Transport Department’s traffic inspector, Mr K. R. McD. Sharpe, who prosecuted Sydney Arthur Mahy, Awakeri carrier, for carrying excessive length of load on a truck.- Mahy, represented by Mr C. A. Suckling, pleaded guilty, and was fined £1 10/- with costs 18/-.

Mr Sharpe explained that, without a special permit, which could be obtained from any local authority, it was illegal to carry a load that extended more than 9ft. 6ins. over the axis of the rear wheels. Mahy’s load of timber on the occasion in question had extended 16 feet.
