Speed In Sport
What is the fastest speed recorded in the sporting arena? The following statistics will prove of interest to all sportsmen and will occasion a surprise to many. Ice hockey, the fastest game of all, sees the puck skimming the ice at 88 m.p.h. Bill Tilden’s service was timed at 152 m.p.h. Star golfers have had their drives clocked at the terrific speed of 180 m.p.h. The hardest penalty kick in soccer never reaches more than 35 m.p.h.. which is equal to the speed of Derby winners. Table tennis players like Victor Barna smash that ball over at 50 m.p.h., but their average shots reach only a fifth of that speed. Harold Larwood, England’s demon bowler, delivered that ball at 90 m.p.h., but Don Bradman was able to drive it to the boundary at 120 m.p.h.! American basebail pitchers whip them down at the hitter at 100 m.p.h.
