Whakatane Rowing Club Holds Trial Fours Under Blustering Conditions
' In heavy rain and with a strong easterly wind making the river very choppy, the Whakatane Rowing Club ran a further series of trial fours on Saturday. Due to the blustery conditions, both boats in the first race sank with half the distance to cover. The boats of the second race sank as they crossed the finishing line. The final was won by K. O’Rourke from L. Stewart, by a canvas. L. Stewart going lightly, caught a crab and gave O’Rourke the advantage to win. Details:—
First Race: L. Carey, M. Nicol, W. Stuart, M. Browne Windley (cox) v K. O’Rourke, K. Hollis, G. Dines, W. Sandham (Delahunty cox). Second Race: L. Stewart, G. Moore, R. King, J. Taylor Windley (cox) v H. Armstrong, T. Reid, R. Morpeth, K. Dines (T. Reid cox) won by Stewart by 2ft. Third Race: P. Armstrong, A. Atkinson, S. Shapley, J. Hudson (Windley cox) v G. Henry, E. Hunt, M. Whittaker, T. Stewart (Delahunty cox) won by Armstrong, a canvas. Fourth Race: K. O’Rourke, G. Dines, W. Sandham, K. Hollis (Delahunty cox) v L. Carey, M. Nicol, W. Stuart, M. Browne (T. Reid cox) won by O’Rourke by half length. Fifth Race: L. Stewart, G. Moore, R. King, J. Taylor (T. Reid cox) v P. Armstrong, A. Atkinson, S. Shapley, J. Hudson (Windley cox) won by Stewart by half length. Final: K. O’Rourke, K. Hollis, G. Dines, W. Sandham (Delahunty cox) v L. Stewart, G. Moore, R. King, J. Taylor (T. Reid cox) won by O’Rourke.
