Sea Lion Is Unusual Visitor To Whale Island
A large grey sealion has be m noticed near Whakatane on various occasions over the Christmas and New Year holidays. ■ Measuring from 10 to 12 feet in length it was'' first noticed by the" crew of the “Tuhoe” just inside the Ohiwa heads. Its next appearance was at Sulphur Bay on Whale Island on New Year’s day. It came out of the sea to look at a party of people who were visiting the island in the Port Whakatane under Capt-. G. Carey. When an attempt was made to obtain a closer look the sealion took® fright and floundered back to the sea.
It was seen again by a party of fishermen two days later in the same vicinity and this time a close examination was possible and a number of photographs were taken. The sealion has probably strayed from the herd and will no doubt stay until it decides to attempt to rejoin its fellows.
