Whakatane Gladiolus Society’s First Annual Show

The first Annual Show of the Whakatane Gladiolus- Society, held in the Winter Show Building, turned out a greater success than members anticipated, although strong winds and adverse weather conditions before the show, played havoc in the gladioli patch, the standard of blooms was high. There were well over 100 entries for competition. Of interest to visitors, was a table “for exhibition only.” A fine display of seedling gladioli which unfortunately were “too far gone” for compettiion was staged by Mr H. J. Ryde, and also by the same exhibitor, a bloom of “the bird of paradise” flower, a tropical plant of the banana family, to mention a few. ' . A fine display of 60 blooms was put on by Mr W. J. Brown, of Hamilton, a specialist in raising and growing gladioli.

Mr Brown who acted as judge, commenting on the show, saidjt was a first class one, and being the Society’s first one it was a credit to the members. Commenting on the standard of the blooms, he said there was nothing in an Auckland show at which he judged a fortnight before, to touch some of the blooms exhibited here.
