Former Whakatane Schoolgirl Scores Notable Tennis Victory
There was a good deal of. drama in the defeat of the sixth-seeded woman player, Mrs S. Painter, of Wellington, in the first day’s play in the New Zealand lawn tennis championships at Auckland, for she was the victim of a 16-year-old schoolgirl, Miss Judy Burke, formerly of Whakatane and now of Taranaki. - .
Miss Burke was marked as a coming Auckland player before she moved with .her family to Midhurst at the end of the last tennis season, and her play against Mrs Painter, an aggressive and competent player, demonstrated 'a partial fulfilment at least of her early promise. On all shots except an occasional backhand, for which she sometimes stood too close to the ball,' Miss Burke hit freely and confidently. Her service had good pace *and splendid length and she redeemed occasional failings on her backhand with other passing shots which, sped ■ down the line with too much pace for Mrs Painter to retrieve.
