Holiday Bowling On Whakatane Club Green: Several Tournaments

The greens of the Whakatane Bowling Club have been well patronised over the holidays. With ideal conditions and fast greens some good bowling was witnessed. Several tournaments were played. In the Christmas Tournament, played on Saturday, December 27, E. Johnson, E. J. Bell, C. Pearson, C. W. Good (s) scored outright victory with 5 wins, playing excellent bowls.

New Year Tournaments On New Year’s Day, teams skipped by P. Smoljan and C. Pearson qualified for Post Section play, the final being won by Smoljan, the teams in the final game were: E. Johnson, T. Anstis, C. R. Coates, P. Smoljan (s) winners and F. Sumner, W. Compton, Bennett, C. Pearson (s) runners-up. A progressive pairs tourney' was held on January 2, the winners being W. Sloane (s) and J. Campbell (lead). On Saturday, January 3, there was a full rink tournament and after several hot days bowlers found the greens very fast. Two teams qualified for ' the final, both scoring 5£ wins in the section play. In the final of six heads, the team skipped by W. Harris settled down quicker and won 6—2. The teams were: J. Martin, C. H. White, J. Alexander, W. Harris (s) winners, and W. Kempion, J. Bell, C. R. Codtes and P. Smoljan £s) runners-up. Intermediate Championship Playing in the final, for the trophy presented by Mr F. Cockerell, for the Intermediate Championship, M. Merito played excellent bowls and defeated his opponent R. Morpeth by a slight margin. Both men had played well in the earlier rounds and commenced the semi-finals with Merito having two lives and Morpeth one life. Morpeth won the semi-final but Merito’s excellent drawing shots were a decisive factor in the final.
