Vacancies In Next Trade Training Courses
The opportunities for ex-service-men to acquire the background of a suitable trade have improved substantially over recent months, witn the result that the pressure of applications has fallen off, forming vacancies in the next schools for carpentry, painting and paperhanging, and plastering. Wages for unskilled or semi-skill-ed occupations are no doubt more attractive than the commencing rate of £6 5s per week in the training schools, but it must be acknowledged that the work of trainees is largely unproductive, when considered on the basis of trade requirements. Provision has been made for an increase in the wage rate at certain stages of training, on the completion of a year, the award rate for the trade is paid for any further training period. A separation allowance of £1 10s a week may be paid to married men obliged to train away from their home towns,, and have to maintain a family there. The carpentry school at Rotorua will accept pakeha, when insufficient Maori ex-servicemen are seeking admission. The Rotorua School will commence at the end of January.
