Mr E. A. Currah’s Sudden Death: Collapse At Bowling Green

Mr Ernest Albert Currah, retired carrier and well-known resident of Whakatane, collapsed and died at the Whakatane Bowling Club’s green on Christmas Eve. He had been ill for something over three months, but appeared to have been recovering.

Mr Currah came from Newquay, Cornwall, England, in 1913 and settled at' Whakatane in 1914. After serving three years with the New Zealanders in the 1914-18 war he returned to this district and established himself in business as a carrier. He conducted that business for 25 years, retiring recently on account of failing health. He was 55 years old.

Though he was not prominent in local affairs, Mr Currah took a keen interest in many organisations in the town, and was prominent in those that have friendship and mutual help as their basis. He held various offices in the Masonic Order, and was also for some time District Grand Master of the Independent Order of Oddfellows. He was a staunch member of the Returned Services Association and a member of the Methodist Church.- Latterly his chief sporting interest was bowling, and on the green his sportsmanship and goodfellowship added to his many friendships. He was a past president of the Whakatane Bowling Club. Mr Currah’s funeral was truly a men’s tribute to a man. Rev. F. J.’ Climo conducted the service, which was accompanied by Masonic Honours, and strong contingents from all men’s organisations in which the R.S.A. and the Bowling Club were prominent, attended.
