BAY OF PLENTY BEACON Published Tuesdays and Fridays. TUESDAY, DEC, 23, 1947 THE PUBLIC AND OURSELVES

This is the last issue of the Deacon for 1947, and the paper will not appear again until January 6, so this seems the appropriate time to express appreciation of the loyalty of this district to its own newspaper. The Beacon thanks its advertisers and subscribers for their support, .and hopes that the time may soon come when better supplies of newsprint will be available and a better paper may be published more frequently. Just now, the newsprint position is extremely difficult, but there is consolation in knowing that drastic cuts in newsprint mean heavy savings in dollars. Some of the measures that had to be taken to conserve the supplies on hand were no more popular inside this organisation than they were outside it. But the aim is and always will be to produce the newsiest possible paper and give the best possible service to advertisers and subscribers within the limits of the material available.

The year that is drawing to a •close has seen substantial progress in this district. There is every reason to suppose that the years that lie ahead will see amazing development here. It will be the Beacon’s aim to grow with 'the district and always to give a service commensurate with the district’s needs.

For a newspaper to give the best possible service to the public, it needs public co-operation, and in that respect the Beacon is fortunate. To all those local body leaders, members and officers, to all the secretaries and ■officers of sports and other local organisations who have helped with contributing the facts from which news is made, this paper expresses its thanks. The friendly, willing co-operation of advertisers in understanding and helping to overcome any difficulties that have arisen has earned the paper’s deep appreciation. It is, then, with sincere appreciation of the mutual goodwill that has existed in the past and confidence that that spirit will endure and grow stronger in the future that the Beacon wishes its advertisers, subscribers and contributors all happiness during the approaching holidays and throughout 1948.
