New Members Welcomed At Monthly Meeting

Votes recorded at the local body elections gave a clear indication that the public recognised the valuable contribution women could make in hospital administration, said the chairman of the Bay of Plenty Hospital Board, Mr J. Mullins, welcoming a new member, Mrs R. Caverhill, at yesterday’s Board meeting. The other newly-elected woman member, Mrs D. E. Sumner, who was the- victim of a motor accident last week, was not present. Mr' A. F. McGougan endorsed what the chairman had said and remarked that he, too, was very pleased to see women on the Board. Committees Appointed The following committees were appointed: Finance, Chairman and Messrs L. Buddie and C. A. Suckling; works, Chairman and Messrs A. F. McGougan and J. P. Caulfield; house committee, Mesdames R. Caverhill and D. E. Sumner with one other Board member monthly in rotation. Accounts totalling £4,564 10s 8d were passed for payment. Matron’s Report A comprehensive report by the matron, Miss K. Miller, concerning furnishing, equipment and staff accommodation and re-organisation was referred to the standing committees for further investigation and report. Free Ambulance Preparatory to the institution of a general free ambulance service, the Hospital Boards Association has advised that the superintendent of the Wellington free ambulance service will be making a survey of existing services and requirements of various districts. He will visit Whakatane in due course. Christmas Cheer The Board decided to make a grant not exceeding £lO to the hospital Christmas cheer fund. It was explained that the fund relied substantially on public donations and that the Board’s grant was intended only as supplementary to those. Appreciation In view of his co-operation and assistance during his term of office as Fire Brigade Superintendent the Board decided to send a letter to ex-Superintendent F. H. Stewart, congratulating him on his attaining his Gold Star in the' Fire services and expressing appreciation of his consideration and assistance to the Board.
