SCHOOL EXTENSIONS: NO IMMEDIATE PROGRESS POSSIBLE
Wednesday night’s meeting of the Whakatane District High .School Committee dealt mainly with routine matters, and again discussed the questions of classroom accommodation, housing for the caretaker and the long range plan for improving the grounds layout. Concerning classrooms, the chairman, Mr J. W. Wilson, said he had it from the Board’s architect there was not much chance of getting prefabricated rooms. Nor did there seem to be any likelihood of the Board’s building any permanent extensions yet. v The committee decided to investigate the possibility of doing something locally/, A similar position exists so far as the caretaker’s cottage is concerned. The Board has informed the committee that the provision of caretakers’ cottages has no part in its building policy and could not be considered until adequate housing had been provided for all teachers. Meanwhile, there is no objection to the committee’s making its own .arrangements, financed locally. The meeting decided to tackle the problem from that angle.
Regarding the long-range plan for the grounds, the committee has enlisted the assistance of Mr W. Dreghorn to put its ideas on paper for submission to the Board, and he attended the meting, taking part in an informal discussion concerning the first rough sketches, which will be prepared during the school holidays.
