Whakatane Women’s Institute Meeting

The Whakatane Women’s Institute held its December meeting in the Methodist Hall. It was considered disappointing to have to postpone the children’s party, but the Institute hopes to hold it early next year. The Arts and Crafts Circle had a stall of Xmas novelties, which did brisk business. A letter was read from Mrs K. Stewart with the season’s greetings for members. A letter from the President of the Federation was also read. Mrs Print was given a vote of thanks for providing morning tea for the carpenters who were building the Institute’s new room. Members were asked to leave their gifts of food for Britain at the nearest committe member’s home before December 10 so that a parcel could be sent before Xmas. The Gardening Circle is to send on this month.

Mrs Print, Mrs Murphy and Mrs King Jnr. were appointed to help in the tea rooms at the A. and P. Show on February'2l. Mrs Bennett’s resignation was accepted with regret. The Institute presented her with a book of Pioneer Tales. One new member was enrolled. A competition, jumbled words was won by Mrs Comer. A wordbuilding competition was won by Mrs Sutcliffe. Competitions: Xmas novelty, Mrs Comer ;1; gladiolus, Mrs Ryde 1; lily, single, Mrs Haultain 1, Mrs Fennell 2; lily, head, Mrs R. P. Shaw 1, Mrs Prideaux 2; peapods, 6,' Mrs Hannah 1, Mrs Fennell 2; box’ strawberries, Shirley Hannah 1. Gardening Circle The Gardening Circle held its monthly meeting at the residence of Mrs Armstrong, Hillcrest. The monthly reading was on the choosing and winning of flowers for wreathmaking. The roll call, “A Summer Garden” was well answered. Demonstration of the thinning of summer growth was given by Mrs Fennell.

Competitions resulted: Double flower, Mrs Armstrong 1; gladioli, Mrs Murphy 1; beetrot, Mrs Hannah 1.
