Trial Run To Rotoma: New Motor Cycle Club Holds First Meeting
The first meeting of the newlyformed Bay of Plenty Motor Cycle Club was held recently when a reliability trial to Lake Rotoma and back was staged. The ten competitors assembled at Edgecumbe, where their machines were inspected before they were allowed tp commence.
Machines were numbered and riders departed at half minute intervals, points being deducted for faulty starting and non-observation of traffic rules. Speedometers and watches were concealed and riders had to maintain an average speed of 30 m.p.h. to the Rotoma dip and 20 m.p.h. from then on to the lake. On arival each rider was put through a tough riding test over a specially prepared course, points being deducted every time he used his feet tc aid him.
A bending competition was then held, with the following results:— R. Whittle, 8.5. A., 1, A. Marsh, A.J.S., .2, J. Marsh, Triumph, 3. After lunch members staged a potato race which proved very popular. The placings were: A. Marsh, A.J.S., 1, B. Greenslade, 8.5. A., 2, T. Woods, Velocette, 3. At 2 o’clock the competitors set off on the return stage of the trial. Thirty m.p.h. was to be averaged all the way and the run was to finish with a brake test at Edgecumbe and an inspection of all machines. The trial placings were: A. Marsh, A.J.S., 1, C. Green, Ariel, 2, W. Baty, Royal Enfield 3, J. Marsh, Triumph, 4. All members voted it a very enjoyable. day and are keenly awaiting their next outing.
