(By “Ringsider”)
Boxing fans of Whakatane were certainly treated to an interesting tournament on November T. Club gym *boys gave a good account of themselves and in eight fights they secured 6 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw. At the conclusion of the tournament a presentation of trophies was made to all tournament winners and the Whakatane Boxing Association kind-, ly consented to include the club trophies.
' The cup for the most outstanding senior boy donated by "Mr F. R. Combes was won by Bill Penny. Bill won his return bout with W. Webby and showed marked improvement. Mr L. Wakelin donated the cup :for the most improved junior and it was won by John Butcher. This lad showed promise and it is hoped he will continue the sport next season. The cup donated by Mr H. Morgan for the best gym boy was carried off by Guy Francis and he certainly deserved it. Guy trains well and is a good example to the other gym boys. Two cups were donated by Mr S. Larsen and Mr W. Schmelz, and were won by lan McKenzie and Tai Hona, these two lads being the best intermediates, showed good promise also, Tai Hona as a rugged type of fighter and lan McKenzie as a boxer. Next season these lads should go far.
Jimmy Lowe, who was unlucky in. not gaining a trophy, has height and. reach in his favour and should do well in the future.
It has been announced that the winning number in the club competition was No. 119.
