November Meeting Of Thornton Young Farmers
At the beginning of the November meeting of the Thornton Young Farmers’ Club, this year’s figures for the quotas to be raised for the National Memorial Fund were given by the secretary, Mr J. Law. A progress report on the various _ clubs’ positions as regards points for the Efficiency Shield, which is competed for yearly, was also given and Thornton was found to be leading with 42 points, from Waimana and Otakiri who have 40 points each. The only correspondence was a letter from the Secretary of the District Committee, Mr Marryatt, regarding a field day to be held at the Government Experimental Farm at Ruakura, on November 11. Unfortunately, it was . not possible to fill the club’s quota of two members, owing to lack of transport and to the fact that most members could not spare the time. It was with regret that the club was forced to turn down this offer which last year proved so very interesting and informative. Several donations towards the Xmas hamper for the National Memorial Fund, were thankfully received.
After the treasurer’s report was read and accepted, the question of the Stock Judging Competition was discussed. Mr A. H. Adams, one of the club’s senior advisory members, said he would like to donate a trophy to be competed for in connection with the Thornton School Calf Club. As time was getting short and there was a lecture to follow this matter was left over until the next meeting. The chairman and two members of the club individually thanked Mr Adams for his very generous offer and said that his suggestion that it should be used in connection with the School Calf Club would be accepted.
