A.A.’s Touring Manager Opposes Saturday Petrol Ban
Immediate action should be taken to prevent the universal Saturday morning closing of all service and petrol stations, said Mr R. E. Champtaloup, the touring manager, in a recommendation received at .a meeting of the council of the Automobile Association (Auckland). Friday night opening did not cater for hun-. dreds who worked that night, and many motorists who endeavoured to save petrol might have Saturday morning as their only opportunity to buy petrol for week-end motoring.
The closing was quite unnecessary to effect the 10 per cent saving and meant the almost complete cessation of all forms of week-end and holiday emergency motoring services. Country proprietors did not support the attitude of the trade organisation.
The report was received, and the president, Mr F. G. Farrell, said the matter would be discussed at a meeting of the North Island Motor Union next week.
