Rehabilitation Aid To Form Contract Building Groups
Subject to certain conditions the Rehabilitation Board will consider assisting suitable groups of ex-servicemen for the purpose of building by contract, particularly in country areas where there is an urgent need for rural housing and farm buildings. This was agreed upon at the monthly meeting of the Rehabilitation Board.
| Striking a note of warning, the Board added to its decision advice that the present time is a difficult one in which to become established owing to the great competition for materials. From the Board’s experience to date it was felt advisable to draw applicants’ attention to four necessary conditions.
The first is the suitability of the team, which would have to be wellbalanced and with a good leader; its members would, of course, have to be building tradesmen. Experience had shown that four carpenters made an excellent group, providing continuity. of work was assured. The availability of work in the area in which the group proposes to establish itself is the second main condition, and the third and fourth respectively are the' availability of materials and sub-contractors. The Board considered that cooperative schemes of such a nature, particularly where they assisted with housing construction, should be encouraged, but in order to succeed the applicants must show the necessary experience and ability.
