Coming-Of-Age Party For Miss A. Luttrell: Gay Awakeri Evening
Mr and Mrs Allan Luttrell of Waimana were host and hostess to approximately 180 guests last Saturday, at the Awakeri Hall on the occasion of the coming of age of their daughter, Anneleith. The evening took the form of a dance, interspersed with items and games. Mrs Luttrell received her guests wearing a cyclamen and white figured silk frock and was assisted by her daughter, Anneleith, who wore a charming gown of white rosebrocaded net relieved with rich red velvet and carried a matching posy of red roses and white carnations made by an absent friend. Miss Bathia Luttrell wore a frock of figured violet poplin trimmed with black silk velvet/
Music for dancing was provided by the Rhythm Vendors Orchestra, with several extras played by Mr A. Wardlaw. Mr Fred Rawson, of Taneatua, as M.C. produced endless novelty twists to the usual dance programme. Balloons, streamers and confetti rained abundantly at appropriate intervals. The hall had been attractively decorated with red and white streamers and fronds of nikau, which were crossed to hold a cluster of cabbagetree blooms tied with large red bows. Arum lilies, white picotees, and red roses given by friends were arranged in vases around the stage. Pride of place was .taken by a table Carrying two large birthday cakes, both gifts. One, decorated in pink, gold and black with a gold key lying across the top and an imitation display in icing, of tennis racquets (a sport in which Miss Luttrell has figured considerably) was a gift from Mrs Nell Smith of Wellington. The other cake, which fitted in with the colour scheme of red and white, was richly decorated, carried the 21 red candles and was a gift from Mrs Goi'don Hewitt of Waimana.
Novelty dances included a Monte Carlo Valeta, a Novelty Monte Carlo won by Miss M. Gow and partner and a Singing Monte Carlo won by Miss A. Luttrell and Mr A. Tebbutt. A Musical Parcel in which the majority of the guests made a complete circle round the hall with two parcels circulating from opposite directions, caused considerable merriment, the lucky winners being Miss Kitty Bennett and Miss Jean Graham.
Early in the evening Miss Joy Perkinson of Awakeri rendered in very pleasing fashion, two songs, “Home on the Range” and “White Cliffs” and was later unanimously returned to sing “Juanita.” Mr Dean Tooke of Whakatane West, rendered two beautiful tenor numbers, “Mother Machree” and “Donkey’s Serenade” while Mr Jack Johnson added a humorous touch to the programme by the rendering of “Mr McGinty’s Goat.” The supper which consisted of savoury and lighter fare, was entirely home-made and served in buffet fashion. Mr D. C. Butler was toastmaster. After Mr Luttrell had presented the key in customary fashion and the guest of honour had cut the cake, the usual toasts, “Guest of Honour” and “Parents of the Guest” were cordially honoured. Miss Anneleith Luttrell, in very charming manner, thanked her parents, friends and guests for the lovely evening and the many beautiful and lasting presents. Mr Allan Luttrell also spoke briefly. «* '
