Whakatane Bowling Club’s Picnic Tournament Ends In Win For W. G. Howat

The Whakatane Bowling Club staged a very successful tournament last weekend, ninety-six bowlers from all parts of the Bay being present. Teams from Opotiki, Taneatua, ftotorua, Mt. MaUnganui and Whakatane were entered. With a perfect day and no wind, the greens were fast and every one enjoyed the day. Section A was won outright by W. G. Howat’s team with 4£ wins. Section B was also won outright by the team skipped by P. Smoljan with 4-2- wins. The final between Howat and Smoljain was an easy victory to Howat. Smoljan’s team had N a disadvantage in that, they had been playing on a slower green all afternoon, whilst Howat’s team had thefeel of the fast green before the final commenced. Howat had been playing exceptional bowls - all day, however, and with his well-balanced team well deserved his win.

The winning team was: J. Alexander, J. Creeke, A. Burgess, W. G. Howat (s) and the runners-up M. Merito,* C. R. Coates, C. Pearson, P. Smoljain (s).
