Whakatane Members Of Electricians’ Institute Meet Dominion President

The monthly meeting of the Whakatane Branch of the Electricians’ Institute was attended by Mr Salvesen, Dominion president, and Mr F. Gilmore, past Dominion president. Mr Lysaght, the branch president, welcomed the visitors and expressed pleasure at their visit. Mr Salvesen said he had noticed the great change in spirit during his tour of branches so far, particularly between Borough engineers and inspectors. Membership, of the institute had almost reached the 2000 mark, and he was pleased to see that all the electricians in Whakatane were members. Mr Salvesen referred to the parent council which he intimated was a very active body and complimented Mr Rough and Mr McKeefe on their excellent work in connection with the Electrical Journal. Branches must also play an important part in this matter. The fine and keen effort made by many members of various branches was mentioned by the Dominion president when he said that those members who had to travel the longest distances were making many of the country branches. He instanced four members of the Whangarei branch who had travelled 100 miles to the meeting and intended to return the same night. He also suggested branches get together more as many branches were waiting for the hand of friendship. Co-operative feeling and effort was most essential.

Mr Lysaght thanked Mr Salvesen for his encouraging address, and also said he was gratified at the work that Mr Gilmore had put into the institute. He hoped that Mr Gilmore would continue to give his valuable services. Mr Gilmore stressed the need for integrity, goodfellowship and selfknowledge. Text books were a great asset, said Mr Gilmore, and great tribute must be' paid to the many authors who by time and effort had shared so much of their experiences. Jt must not be forgotten also that the status of the electrician was in his. own hands. He also suggested tliat every branch should openly discuss shoddy materials which were on the market today.'
