Well Throughout Longsword, victor in the Wellington Handicap at Trentham, was trained at Greytown, Wairarapa. Now, Greytown has not been known as a good training ground, and it is 50 years since any hoise of note has been put through a racing preparation there. King’s Ransom After winning the sprint event at Masterton the Gisborne candidate, King’s Ransom was taken down to Trentham. In a big field for the Wainui Handicap, one mile, he was superior at any part and won on the bit by two lengths, and it is reported that he made hacks of the opposition. He is certainly going along very nicely in view of his N.Z. Cup engagement.
Increased Prize Money The stakes for the Manawatu Cup on December 20 have been increased to £2,000. The event is one in which horses engaged in the Auckland Cup a week later can be given their trial gallops for the £IO,OOO two miles.
Top Of The List The Auckland trained Bailoch colt, Tauloch, is the highest stake winner among the two year olds so far this season with £1315 to his credit. Invitation To Shannon
The Hon. Elliott Davis, part owner of Sleepy Fox, recently forwarded an invitation to Mr Smith, Sydney, owner of the 23,000 guineas Shannon to bring the Australian champion galloper to the Auckland meeting to compete with the front rankers there including Sleepy Fox. The Auckland owner stated he would be pleased to provide all the necessary stabling and paddocking for the occasion. Mr Smith’s reply was to the effect that a trip to America had already been arranged for Shannon, but he deeply appreciated the Hon. Davis’ kind offer.
Winning Lines The speedy Citation, winner of the Shorts Handicap at Trentham, is one of the last of the Night Raid’s still racing. Her dam, Follow On, is by Lord Warden, tracing back to the Musket and St. Simon strains. Gisborne Representatives The Gisborne grey, Findon, on account of soreness, has been sent back to Hastings, and will require a lengthy respite from work.. He was expected to be in the pink of form for the N.Z. Cup meeting, but limb trouble has necessitated a spell. Gisborne representatives are, however, still in the limelight, for its N.Z. Cup hope, King’s Ransom, scored two very meritorious successes at Trentham in the Wainui and .Watkins Handicaps, the stakes in the latter event being £2500. Rozami Sold
The Matamata owner-trainer, R. H. Martin, has sold his Nizami filly, Rozami, to Mr A. H. Demler, at a four figures price. She will still be trained by Martin. Racing In America
Australia’s speedster Shannon, now on his way to America, is to have his first race there, the San Carlos Handicap, of £16,000, seven furlongs, on January 1.
A Day Of Days W. J. Broughton, New Zealand’s premier horseman, had one of the best days of his successful career at Trentham, for he scored with King’s Ransom, Thimble, Air Belle and Voltaic in the four principal events of the meeting. Racing Stakes Increased
Next year’s Doncaster Handicap and Sydney Cup will carry added prize money. The Australian Jockey Club committee has decided tnat these two events will also be governed by a stated maximum weight of 9.10 and 9.7 respectively. The Doncaster Handicap will now be worth £SOOO and the Sydney Cup £BOOO. The Doncaster formerly was worth £3500 and the Sydney Cup £6OOO. It is expected there will be added prize money for next year’s Epsom Handicap and Metropolitan Handicap.
