Plant Mars Rough, Rocky, And Almost Waterless

More is known about the surface of Mars than about any other planet. It is rough and rocky, the reddish tinge which it gives to the reflected sunlight we see being due to the oxidation or rusting of the ironbearing rocks. There are dark patches visible through powerful telescopes, caused by a difference in the nature of the rocks. There are no oceans.

Only the slightest trace of water vapour has been found in the light atmosphere surrounding Mars, so that the surface is never obscured by clouds. This atmosphere contains about one per cent, of the oxygen found in our own earth’s envelope. Dazzling white caps which cover the north and south poles of the planet are probably a crust of snow a few inches thick.
