Moving Of Winter Show Building Main Bar To Amalgamation With A. & P.
Concerning amalgamation with the A. and P. Association, Mr H. G. Warren, president of the Whakatane Winter Show Association told the annual meeting on Tuesday night that the great difficulty at the moment Was the shifting of the building to the Domain site. He said he thought there was a reasonable prospect of shifting the building early in 1948. He added that there was good reason to hope that, since little new material would be required and most of the labour would be voluntary, a permit would be obtainable. He quoted correspondence from the Building Controller to support that view.
After discussion the matter was left in the hands of the incoming executive.
Mr Warren said the requisite supervision, organisation and skill could come only from a competent firm of contractors, but the unskilled labour would need to be voluntary. Mr Sullivan had said he would not support a scheme to use new material and building workers who might be required for housing. Mr Warren said he agreed, and was sure a permit could not be obtained on that basis.
Others ’ were of the opinion that, without voluntary labour, the job would not be done for five years, but agreed with the president that it must be under competent direction.
Officers elected were:—Patron, Mr W. Sullivan, M.P.; president, Mr H. G. Warren; committee, Messrs. W. Clark, G. Otley, F. M. Abbott, A. Hall W. G. Howat, F. B. Cutler, A. Shaw, Walter Armstrong, J. Waterhouse, C. L. Jordan, and A. J. Canning (with power to add); auditor, Messrs. Prideaux, Bridger and Harland; treasurer, Mr C. G. Caisley.
