Red Cross Street Stall Raises Forty Pounds
At the monthly meeting of the Whakatane Branch of the Red Cross Society Mrs Barry reported that the street stall held on September ,26 had raised £4O. The greater part of the takings were to be devoted to the Food for Britain scheme. On the motion of Mrs Sullivan it was decided to forward £SO to this fund. Mrs Lovelock read two letters sent to the Centre Secretary, Mrs Winstone, one from the Rotary Club, enclosing a donation of of £l6 2s and promising a further sum, and one from the Chamber of Commerce promising £lB per annum, with possibly a further donation from individual members. Great apprecia--tion-WJLS expressed, not only at the : monetary support; but at - the- fact that two such representative organisations had placed themselves behind the Red Cross in its relief work. It was decided to hold a further street stall in December, particulars to be decided later. Mrs Sullivan reported that the last consignment of clothing sent away had reached Auckland. There were over 1500 garments despatched, to a total value of £7OO. There were enough garments on hand again to fill several cases. It was decided that letters of thanks should be sent to Mrs Morcom and Mrs Schofield, both of whom had sent in a steady stream of beautifully knitted garments to the Society for sending overseas. Discussion took place re increasing subscriptions to the magazine.
