Taneatua-Gisborne Rail Link Discussed In House
As soon as a practical surveyor and an engineer could be spared to go into the extension of the railway line from Taneaua to Opotiki and on to Gisborne, the Government would get on with the job, said the Minister of Railways (the Hon. R. Semple) in the House of Representatives.
However, there was a shortage of a dozen engineers in the department and all available surveyors were engaged on high priority jobs. Mr W. Sullivan (Opposition—Bay of Plenty) said that previous promises about the line had been made by the Minister, who had stated a year ago that a surveyor would be cr; the ground within 12 months. This had not happened, and people h the district were saying that the Minister was running away.
The Minister: I have never run away in my life, and I am not running away now. I am honest and sincere when I say that as soon as we can get these skilled personnel we will get ahead with the job. jesss*.
