GRANDSTAND QUESTION TO SERVE ALL SPORTS Following the reception of a deputation from the Whakatane Rugby Union at a meeting of the works committee the following resolution came before the Borough Council on Monday: “That the question of granting a 21 year lease and giving the Rugby Union the right to make a gate charge on each day of play be referred to the Municipal Association Solicitor for an opinion.” The fact that the Rugby Union desired to have the area sown in February in readiness for next season made an early decision desirable.
It was decided that until the opinion was received nothing could be done.
A clause relating to the grandstand, “that all takings be retained by the Domain Board until the stand is paid for,” came in for considerable discussion.
Cr Creeke said that a grandstand should be for the benefit of all sports and not for one alone which could quite easily happen. A final decision in this matter, however, was again considered to be dependent on the legal opinion.
