M’s.P. To Inspect Proposed Site For Paper And Pulp Mill

Invited by the directors of Whakafane Paper Mills Ltd., and headed by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr S. G. Holland, a group of National Party members of Parliament will arrive at Whakatane tomorrow afternoon on an'inspection tour which will cover the proposed development by the Government of a paper and pulp industry at Murupara, as well as other forestry interests already operating in the North Island.

The party, conducted by Mr G. H. Mackley, M.P. for Wairarapa, and managing director of the Company, in conjunction with Mr W. Sullivan, district Member, will . include the senior Opposition Whip, Mr W. J. Broadfoot, the junior Opposition Whip, Mr T. L. Macdonald, Mr W. A. Bodkin (Central Otago), Mr J. R. Hanan (Invercargill), Mr J. A. McL. Roy (Clutha), Mr C. R. Herron (Awarua), Mr W. H. Fortune (Eden), Mr E. P. Aderman (New Plymouth) and Mr J. R. Marshall (Mount Victoria).. Leaving Wellington on the limited express today, the visitors will inspect the cardboard mill at Whakatane on arrival tomorrow afternoon after visiting the hydro-elec-tric station at Karapiro, and will attend a dinner- here tomorrow evening. On Sunday the party will visit Murupara and Kaingaroa, where it will inspect the recently-established sawmill and the State’s largest timber areas in that locality. Pekepeke lookout station, 1700 feet above sea level, and the department’s headquarters will also be visited. On Monday the party will visit the forest areas of the Whakatane Paper Mills, Ltd., at Matahina, to inspect cutting and logging operations and the State sawmill and boxmaking plant at Waipa, near Rotorua.
