Boys Brigade Captain Mr Te Hira Fergusson who has recently returned to Whakatane has resumed duties as captain of the Ist Whakatane Company of the Boys’ Brigade. His assistant will be Mr Jim Ferguson. ,
Donation to Red Cross The sum of £l6 2s has been handed the local branch of the Red Cross Society by the Whakatane Rotary Club in the interests of the Food for Britain Campaign. This constitutes the immediate response to the appeal made last week by the president, Rotarian Harry Warren. Decision To Stand In the face of popular clamour to stand again for the Borough Council, Mr W. Sullivan, M.P., who headed the strong deputation which waited on. Mr B. S. Barry last week, yielded to pressure and indicated his willingness to seek re-election. “It’s pretty hard,” he remarked, with a glance in Mr Barry’s direction, “to ask another man to undertake a job you’re not prepared to take on yourself.” Driving Habits The driving habits of many local motorists are far from perfect but one noticed in Domain Road opposite Cadman’s this morning must take the cake. He swung round from King Street and stopped in the middle of the road to talk to a friend. A car coming down Landing Road tooted without effect and was forced almost right off the bitumen in order to pass. These drivers are to be pitied because after all they may not live long! Debt Cases Judgment was entered for plaintiff in the following debt cases heard before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Whakatane Magistrate’s Court sitting last Tuesday: Farmers Meat Company v K. T. Rangihika £ls (cdsts £5 16s 6d); Alan H. Morpeth v H. Keepa £2 14s 7d (£2 3s 6d); Brabant Bros. Ltd. v Jack Clayton £25 (£3 11s 6d); R. Dayha v Olive Porter £2l 6s 9d (£5 6s 6d); R. Dayha v R. Angerson £35 18s 9d (£5 6s 6d); R. Dayha v Mark Huta £ls 8s lOd (£3 19s); J. S. Wells v E. Hohapata £9 2s (£4 11s). Judgment summons: Standard Trading Company v T. E. Biddle £l2 5s 6d, in default 12 days imprisonment.
Forty-Hour Week “I found wide interest in Australia in the operation of New Zealand’s 40-hour week,” said Mr A. J. Scott, of Christchurch, who has returned after a seven months’ stay in . Melbourne.. r Saturday work has been usual in Melbourne, but actually many businesses arranged for employees to work on alternate Saturdays, and this avoided the “bleak Saturdays which visitors to New Zealand complain about so bitterly.” Mr Scott added that he thought Australia was just getting into difficulties from which New Zealand was emerging, and if Australians were wise, they would profit from New Zealand’s experience.
Rock From Wainui At the monthly meeting of the Opotiki County Council last week, a petition was received from Waiotahi settlers wanting permission to get rock from the Wainui road as this rock was most suited for road work. The engineer, Mr W. W. Upton, said that the road was under the Main Highways Board and that metal had been taken by some person from the quarry. Cr Wilson was of the opinion that settlers should be permitted to obtain metal from somewhere on the road, and Cr Bennett backed up this contention. Cr Wilson suggested interviewing the Public Works Department on the matter.
