INSTITUTE MEETING

FLOWER SHOW RESULTS

The October meeting of the Wai-mana-Nukuhou Women’s Institute was held, recently, Mrs R. Looney presiding. Owing to very bad weather, the attendance was not as good as usual. The main feature of the programme, was a flower show arranged by members of the gardening circle for W.I. members. The entries in the cut flower section were quite good, and the decorative section brought forth a large number of excellent entries.

The proceedings opened with the singing of the Institute song, and Mrs I. Savage read the Aspirations, followed by the reading of the president’s letter from “Home and Country.” The minutes were read and adopted. Mrs M. King and Mrs T. King were appointed delegates to attend a meeting in Whakatane in connection with the forthcoming A. and P. Show.

Mrs R. Looney gave a most interesting demonstration on the making of vases or bowls with jars and plaster of Paris, several finished articles being on display. ‘ The judges for the show were Mrs E. Hill and Mrs Frost of Taneatua and both ladies gave a short talk on certain points to remember when exhibiting flowers and decorative work.

Mrs Looney thanked the judges, hostesses, gardening circle members and all who had helped with the programme. The results of the usual monthly competitions were: — Single flower: Mrs Hewitt 1, Mrs Stevenson 2, Mrs H. Bell 3. Double flower: Mrs H. Bell 1, Mrs Stevenson 2, Mrs Woolfield 3. Vegetable: Mrs Hewitt. The following show results were: Cut Flowers Three Daffodils, long trumpets: Mrs M. King. Three short tumpets: Mrs M. King 1, Mrs S. Eagle 2, Mrs Wylde 3. Collection of bulbs, 1 of each variety: Mrs Eagle 1, Mrs C. White 2, Mrs Wylde 3. Collection of flowering shrubs: Mrs J. Mitchell 1, Mrs Woolfield 2, Mrs Wylde 3. Head of Stock: Mrs Hampton 1, Mrs Eagle 2, Mrs M. King 3. Tulips: Mrs J. Mitchell 1. Anemones: Mrs Hampton 1, Mrs Hewitt 2. Pansies: Mrs Hewitt 1, Mrs White 2, Mrs King 3. Heads Nemesia: Mrs Eagle 1. Collection of Arcototis: Mrs Eagle Heads of Polyanthus: Mrs G. Mitchell 1, Mrs Stevenson 2 and 3. Decorative Coat Spray, not wired: Mrs Stevenson 1, Mrs Hampton 2, Mrs King 3 Frock Spray, wired: Mrs G. Mitchell 1, Mrs Hampton 2.
