POROPORO RETAINS CUP
A senior and a junior game were played at the Domain on Saturday. Main interest centred around the Bracken Cup game between United and Poroporo seniors. Heavy rain spoilt what would have been a really grand game. Both teams were flat out from start to finish and no opportunities were lost by either team. Old Boys defeated School dn a very good display. Detailed results were:— OLD BOYS 18, SCHOOL 11 . High School kicked off and Old Boys took the ball back to halfway. A loose scrum developed and M. Tiepa secured for Old Boys. He sidestepped several players and passed but the ball was fumbled. School took play deep into Old Boys territory but white rallied and returned play to the centre of the field. Play swayed about until a Jine kick by Tiepa gained ground. Old Boys gained more and B. Taylor crossed the line but School forced for a 25. , From a scrum near School goal line the Old Boys’ backs secured but a pass from Howat was missed. School gradually returned play to the midfield. School backs got away and the wing put in a nice run. He was taken on the line and Old Boys forced. School were awarded a penalty and P. Carter tried a shot. It was a long kick and went wicle. Old Boys backs got away again and Mundy went over in the corner accompanied by several school players. A 25 was ordered. Chadwick took a penalty at goal for School but the ball went wide. The first score went to Old Boys. J. Taylor put in a good run and scored in the corner. The kick missed. Old Boys 3, School 0. Following this score play was hard and mostly in the centre. School forwards broke away and Conway scored beside the posts. Wano converted. School 5, Old Boys 3 Old Boys forced School back to the goal line at the start of the second half but a free, kick on the goal line allowed School to clear.
Old Boys came again and Howat scored. He converted his own try. Old Boys 8, School 5
M. Tiepa scored the next try between the posts. Armstrong con-, verted.
Old Boys 13, School 5
From the kick off School backs took the ball up but couldn’t quite make the line. A short time later School did get over but a 25 was ordered.
Quigg took a pass from Taylor and had a good opening but the whistle went for a forward pass. From the scrum School backs got away and Skelton went over in the corner. Wano was very unlucky in missing the kick. Old Boys 13, School 8
Old Boys forced through and J Taylor scored. Carling converted. Old Boys” 18, School 8
Mundy, Taylor and Carling got away together but a pass. from Taylor to Carling was droppe’d. The ball was taken over and a 25 ordered. School backs got away from a lineout and Brown scored well out. Another good kick by Wano fell short.
Old Boys 18, School 'll The whistle went for time with no alteration in the scores. Mr Whitehead was referee.
POROPORO 15, - UNITED 11
United kicked off but blue returned play with a nice line kick. From the lineout Poroporo took play well up but good play by Cave and a line kick by McGougan gained ground. United were awarded a penalty for wasted time and McGougan sent over a beauty. United 3, Poroporo 0 Blue backs got away for the line but the whistle went and a scrum was ordered. The blue backs got the ball from the scrum 1 and Hotene scored well out. The kick missed. United 3, Poroporo 3 United made a determined bid but Poroporo forced the ball into touch. From a lineout on the opposite side the backs handled. Cave passed to McGougan at the last minute leaving him a clear run. McGougan converted his own try. United 8, Poroporo 3 ' A United player tackled a man offside and Poroporo was awarded a penalty in a handy position. The ball went low. McGougan gained ground with a line kick but United could not gain further. The blue backs broke away and Nuku scored between the posts. An easy kick 'missed. United 8, Poroporo 6 From a scrum on the white goal Poroporo hooked. A long pass by a bue man was picked up by United and passed to Hunt who put in a long run. He was taken and the ball went into touch. United got away again. McGougan put in a long run to score between the posts. The kick missed.
United 11, Poroporo 6 Rain began to fall late in the first half, making conditions very ' unpleasant. . ‘ Poroporo was awarded a penalty on United 25. Biddle “only just” put it over, the ball landing on the bar and bouncing over. * \ t United 11, Poroporo 9 In the second, half Poroporo were the first to gain ground. United rallied and forced them back. Rolfe headed a dribbling rush but the ball was kicked too hard and Poroporo cleared. D. Stewart broke away in possession but a pass slipped and the move, broke. Blue were awarded a frfee kick on the halfway mark but United returned play to the centre. Another free kick to Poroporo went wide. It appeared an easy, one but the wet condition of the balk may have been the cause. United had a hard t time defend-/ ing their line and from a scrum Hotene scored. The kick missed. Poroporo 12, United 11 United carried play to the blue goal and a free kick to Poroporo eased the situation. Another free kick to Poroporo allowed the blue team to gain more ground. Heavy rain recommenced about halfway through the period. Moeke (Poroporo) received an injury to the leg and left the field.. Poroporo dribbled the ball oyer but the whistle went for a 25. McGougan on the wing received the ball and raced up the line. He passed in but a forward pass was ruled. ■ A greasy ball and field hampered play but Poroporo dribbled through and Nuku scored. The ball slipped off the kicker’s foot. ■ - Poroporo 15, United 11 D. Stewart was injured and retired. The United pack dribbled the ball : over but Poroporo forced and a 25 was ordered. MAORIS v PAKEHAS
JACKSON SHIELD. MATCH
On Saturday a Maoris v Pakehas match will be played at the Domain for the Jackson Shield. The game will commence at 2 p.m. and all proceeds will go to aid players-injured during the season. Players are asked to assemble not later than 1.15, the Maoris at the band rotunda and the Pakehas at the A. and P. shed. Teams
