CROQUET
WHAKATANE CLUB
SUCCESSFUL OPENING DAY
Last Wednesday, October 8, the local Croquet Club was opened in weather that fortunately turned out line for the occasion. There was a good attendance of members, their husbands and visitors.
The president, Mrs Burgess, in her opening address expressed pleasure at the large attendance and made special mention regarding members of the Opotiki Croquet Club who had attended for the opening. Mrs Maddern, president of the Opotiki club, suitably responded. Mr Burgess was then called upon to play the first ball. During the afternoon competitions were held and a Bring and Buy Stall was well patronised. The following were winners of the various competitions:— Progressive Croquet: Mrs Hellyar. Consolation: Mrs Burton, Opotiki. Ladder Croquet: Ladies: Mrs Baxter. Hitting the Peg, Ladies: .Mrs. Burke. Ladder Croquet, Gents: Mr Creeke Hitting the Peg, Gents: Mr White. ' Bag of Coal: Mrs Goodall. Dinner: Mrs Britten. Box Chocolates: Mrs Burgess. During the winter months card parties were given to supplement the funds of the club by the following members. Mesdames Creeke, Stone, Carling and Dillicar. All these gatherings were successful and Well patronised. . The greens are in excellent order and with several new members joining up a successful season seems to be assured.
