Collecting Fats
In Cathedral Square, Christchurch, is a fat collecting depot which nobody passing through the Square could very well miss seeing. Probably as a direct result of this central depot, more than half the fat collected in the 20 districts into which New Zealand is divided came from the Christchurch district. That was an indication of the great stores of fat not tapped in the Dominion, according to the last report of the chairman of the Food for Britain Council (Mr T. N. Smallwood) to the Famine Emergency Committee. People coming from Britain had repeatedly stated that fat and soap were what the British people needed most.
