SATURDAY’S GAMES

UNITED DEFEATS MT. MAUNGANUI

Two games were played at the Domain on Saturday before a good crowd. United seniors gained an easy victory over a Mt. Maunganui team in a game which could not be called spectacular. United slowly piled up the points and were 16 ahead at the final whistle.

In the junior section a very fast game resulted from a meeting between United and Hamilton. The visitors were a heavier team and had the measure of their opponents from the start. United played solidly and contested every inch of their territory.- Details were:—

UNITED 24, MT. MAUNGANUI 8 United (White) kicked off but Mount (Green and Black) took play back. United were awarded a free kick and gained ground. Mount recovered and forced play back. Hunt put in a nice kick and Mount forced behind their own goal. Raymond kicked off, the ball being taken by McGougan who returned it with a nice line kick.

United were awarded a penalty and McGougan tried a shot. A great kick and it was over all the way. United 3, Mount 0. Shapley received an injury and retired after receiving attention. * The green backs got away and very nearly scored in the corner. A scrum was ordered and United cleared. McGougan tried another penalty at goal but it missed. Another in a letter position soon after failed again. A long kick by McKenzie found touch near the green goal. From the lineout the white backs tried hard to force an opening but Mount held their ground. A green man was injured close to the United goal but returned to the field after receiving attention. United forced behind their goal line and play returned to the 25. The United backs gained possession and gained a good amount of ground. Mount returned play to the centre again. From a scrum United secured and K. Hollis dgved over to score in a good position. McGougan converted. United 8, Mount 0.

The second half found United with the sun behind them. They forced Mount back and Rolfe went oyer carrying several green men. A 25 was ordered. Wilson had a clear run for the goal but sent a wild pass out. A scrum was ordered.

McGougan ran for line and threw a trick pass behind. No one was there however and a likely opening missed. United were awarded a free kick in a marvellous position. McGougan put it over. United 11, Mount 0.

Loose play took place near the United line and a green man was injured. He returned to the field after receiving attention. Mount went over but McGougan forced for a 25.

Fast play by Butler and McGougan took United to the line. The backs got under way again and McGougan came within an ace of scoring. From the lineout D. Stewart scored handy to the goal. McGougan converted. United 16, Mount 0. Cave put in a great run but despite hard work by the backs United couldn’t get over. A green man intercepted a pass but tripped and lost the ball. Rolfe (United) was injured but ■played on after receiving attention. McGougan put in a beautiful solo run and dodged past several players to score between the posts. Cave converted. United 21, Mount 0. With little time in hand Mount went over and T. Murray forced. The kick missed. ' United 21, Mount 3. From a scrum Green scored well out. Johnston forced and Marcroft converted. United 21, Mount 8. Unted backs gained possession and McKenzie scored in the corner. Wilson missed a hard kick. United 24, Mount 8. The whistle went for time with no alterations in the scoring. Mr Mahy was referee.

HAMILTON 15, UNITED 11

" United (White) kicked off. The Hamilton (Red and Black) backs handled but the whistle went for an infringement. Play surged back and forth but neither team gained for long. Three white forwards took the ball at their feet to within the Hamilton 25. Considerable loose

play resulted and the ball was kicked over the goal line. Red forced. From the 25 red put in a determined effort and managed to take the ball over. United forced and another 25 resulted.

From a lineout the white backs were set in motion but the ball was fumbled. From a scrum M. Tiepa, the white, half secured and put in., a long run and a good kick. "Play went into touch inside the red 25. From the lineout the white forwards led by Taylor carried play on a little further but Hamilton cleared. The white forwards broke away with the ball at their toe, Howat leading the move. They gained a lot of ground before the ball went into touch near the red goal. The white backs got possession from the lineout but a penalty to Hamilton enabled them to clear.

Hamilton were awarded a penalty in a handy position but the kick went wide. The red backs gained possession and carried play to the white goal line. The ball was forced by United and a 25 ordered. From a scrum the white backs lost the ball to Hamilton. Goodall secured and cleared. The Hamilton backs handled and Street, the wing, had a clear run to score in the corner. A difficult kick bounced back from the crossbar. ' Hamilton 3, United 0. Hamilton scored again in the corner after loose rucking near the white goal. Meredith forced. The kick missed. Hamilton 6, United 0. Soon after the red backs again went over in the same position. Lehmann forced. A difficult kick again fell short. Hamilton 9, United 0. The white forwards dribbled the ball up to the red goal and a red man took it into touch. A lineout folowed and then a scrum. Tiepa secured, dummied and passed to Henderson who scored. The kick missed. Hamilton 9, United 3. The whistle went for half-time'. United gained possession from the kick jroff but the red defence held. The white forwards took the ball up and the backs took over. A solid effort met a defence and; United couldn’t find an opening. From a scrum Howat dribbled the ball over but a red man forced for a 25. The Hamilton backs broke away but lost a wonderful opportunity by bad passing. Hamilton wp’e awarded a penalty in a handy spot and Miskell put it over. Hamilton 12, United 3. From loose play in the corner, Hamilton again scored, Miskell forcing. The kick missed. Hamilton 15, United 3. United forwards put in some hard work and Taylor scored between the posts. Carling converted an easy kick. Hamilton 15, United 8. United, were awarded a penalty in a handy position but the kick mised. Hamilton came near to scoring in the final stages when a good run led by Cowley fell short. From a scrum Taylor broke out and dived over to score. Howat missed a hard kick. Hamilton 15, United 11. , The final wdiistle went soon after. Mr Oswald was referee.

BRACKEN CUP GAME

UNITED SENIOR. TEAM

The following is the team to represent United against Poroporo on Saturday in the final of the Bracken Cup games. Team to assemble at the A. and P. shed not later than 1.45:

Boon, McGougan, Cave, Hunt, Morpeth, Stewart, Debreceny, Rolfe, L. Stewart, Wilson, Gardner,' Hollis, T. Green, Butler, C. Green. Reserves: Forwards, Goile; backs, Kahui, McKenzie. The team is reminded of the practice runs at the Domain on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 5 p.m.
