A pleasant surprise awaited Mr E. Dillicar recently when a lady from the Matata Women’s Institute handed him the sum of £l9 10s 5d being the' residue, of money raised by a special effort at Matata in the interests of St.- John Ambulance Brigade. As secretary .of the local branch Mr Dillicar lost no time in bringing the matter before his committee which is deeply appreciative.
Rainfall Figures The total rainfall last month was 2.5 inches. There were eight wet days and the highest fall for a day was .79 on the 20th. Figures for the nine months to September 30th were 45.37 inches. For the corresponding period last year the figure was 49 inches. A heavy fall occurred in Whakatane on one occasion when .11 inches was registered. At Edgecumbe however no rain fell at all.
W.I. Drama Festival Keen interest will be taken in the forthcoming Women’s Institute Drama Festival to be held in Taneatua. Eleven teams . are competing —one coming from as far afield as Galatea. Mrs Edna Connor of Tauranga is to be the adjudicator. Five one-act plays are to be presented on the first day and six on the second day. The winning plays are to be staged later at both Edgecumbe and Waimana. Players are working hard and first class entertainments are anticipated.
Tribue to Deputy-Mayor Speaking at the. deputation which waited on Mr B. S. Barry yesterday a number of complimentary references were also made of the DeputyMayor (Mr S. S. Shapley). Mr C. Good claimed that in many ways Mr Shapley did as much work as the Mayor, in his own sphere. Mr Barry also stated that during the whole of his term he had had nothing else but the greatest co-opera-tion and loyalty from Mr Shapley and he sincerely hoped that he cdhld be prevailed upon to stand again.
Young N.Z. Club Attracting considerable attention oh Friday was the display of toys in front of the Regent Theatre. The articles have all been made by Whakatane members of the Young New Zealanders’ Club under the direction of Mrs Cairns. Pride of place went to a large model yacht, donated by Mr Kerr. This was only part of a total of about .200 articles which, will be displayed in Morpeths’ window next week. The toys will be distributed amongst child welfare organisations.'
Grassed Areas Deteriorating That it was becoming almost impossible to maintain the grassed areas on the grounds > at the Tauranga Primary School, was expressed by the headmaster, Mr C. C. Southey, in his report to the monthly meeting of the committee. The gardener had been doing good work and it was hoped that the Arundel Street frontage would be improved shortly, he added. It was stated later that the large number of children who had to use the grounds may have been responsible for the condition of the grass.
