BRACKEN CUP GAME A scratch team fielded by Raroa on Saturday was defeated by Waijmana at the Domain. Waimana played a poor game even though they succeeded in taking the Bracken Cup. Scoring was even until late in the game when Waimana secured a try and a penalty goal. Paroa took the kick off and Waimana backs took the ball back to the half way mark. Laurie kicked for touch and play was carried into Waimana territory. Several lineouts followed and Paroa took the ball! over. A 25 was ordered.
The Waimana back line handled from a scrum and the wing gained ground with a line kick.
Paroa was awarded a free kick from an infringement in a scrum on the half-way mark but Waimana held their ground. Waimana were awarded a free kick for an infringement in a lineout but Laurie took the ball and returned it to Waimana territoi’y. Paroa forced their way over the Red goal line but Waimana cleared again. Paroa came again and a Red iman kicked ;the ball into touch. From the lineout Waimana carried the ball to a safe distance from the goal but Paroa kept pressing and were soon over once more. Waimana forced.
Laurie put in a long kick towards the red goal. The fullback forced and play returned to the 25 yards mark. Waimana broke away but Laurie was on the spot and took the red man in possession into touch, with him.
From a free kick Paroa returned play to the centre of the field. From a lineout the Waimana backs took the ball and gained some ground. Paroa took possession and the wing had a clear run for the line when the whistle went for an infringement. Waimana then carried play well into Paroa territory. Paroa halted their advance and the ball went into touch. Half-time came with no scores on either side. From the kick off Waimana took the initiative, carrying play into Paroa, territory but Paroa soon rallied. A nice line kick by Laurie found touch close to the red goal line. Paroa defended and were gradually forced back. Paroa came again and play remained'very close to the Waimana goal. From a scrum Paroa went over and C. Pile forced. Paroa 3, Waimana 0. A kick at goal from the Paroa 25 by Martin missed but Waimana succeeded in keeping play in black territory. From a lineout on their own 25 Waimana secured and Addison put in a great run to score in the corner. The kick missed. Paroa 3, Waimana 3. Red got away again but a nice tacked by Wahapango stopped the; move. Paroa got away again fairly close. The ball went along to Wahapango who put in a good .sprint in bare feet and long trousers to score well out. The kick missed. Paroa 6, Waimana 3. Martin was awarded another free kick but this missed again. The Paroa backs got away once more, the ball was passed to Riini but he failed to quite reach the line. Waimana carried play deep into Paroa territory. Loose play on the goal, line resulted in G. Hayward forcing for the red team. Martin, missed a difficult kick. Waimana 6, Paroa 6. Soon after J. Marra, Waimana, broken leg and as no first aid wafer available play was transferred to the other field while the injured player awaited the arrival of the ambulance.
Play commenced with a scrum. . and Paroa carried play into red territory. Loose play took place, Waimana gained the upper hand returning play to Paroa territory. For an infringement Waimana were ; awarded a kick at goal from a handy position. Boynton put it over. Waimana 9, Paroa 6. Time was short and both teams kept up their efforts. Hughes broke away with the ball at his toe and scored a good try. well out. The kick missed. Waimana 12, Paroa 6. Despite hard work by both teams with Waimana having the upper hand no more scores were taken. "Mr F. Peebles was referee.
