HOCKEY

FINAL MATCH WAIRAKA RETAINS CUP Over the weekend some very even and exciting hockey was witnessed at Ruatoki when Wairaka was challenged by the Ruatoki team for the Te Harunu Memorial Cup. The game commenced with Ruatoki playing into the sun and Wairaka being bustled by the Ruatoki forwards but some outstanding saves were made by Wairaka’s goalie Merito. Wairaka then made a bid for goal, Penny making a brilliant run with Joe Hudson who scored. Wairaka’s points were raised once more by Hudson, making the score 2—o in Wairaka’s favour. McTavish notched a penalty for Ruatoki. Wairaka started another movement, Penny featuring again. This time the shot went wide of the goal. Play was ranging up and down the field when Tai Riini scored another goal for Wairaka. McTavish scored a few minutes after for Ruatoki, making the score 3—2 in Wairaka’s favour.

The Ruatoki forwards pressed once more and a pretty shot from Hepi Biddle passed Merito, making the score 3—3.

Play was now very fast but neither team managed to score. The final score was 3 all, Wairaka retaining the cup.
